The ganglion cyst looks like a fluid-filled sac. Inside it is a clear, colorless, thick, sticky material. Depending on the size of the ganglion cyst, it may feel firm or spongy. Ganglion cysts are the most common mass or lump in the hand. They are not cancerous and, in most cases, are harmless. They occur in various locations, but most frequently develop on the back of the wrist.

It is rare, but a ganglion cyst may be painful, especially if the cyst presses a nerve. The cyst may sometimes interfere with joint movement. Most of the times, ganglion cysts clear on their own.
