A ganglion cyst is round, small and usually ganglion cysts are painless. The ganglion cyst is a tumor or swelling on top of a joint or the covering of a tendon. A tendon is the tissue that connects muscle to bone.

What is a Ganglion Cyst?

The ganglion cyst looks like a fluid-filled sac. Inside it is a clear, colorless, thick, sticky material. Depending on the size of the ganglion cyst, it may feel firm or spongy. Ganglion cysts are the most common mass or lump in the hand. They are not cancerous and, in most cases, are harmless. They occur in various locations, but most frequently develop on the back of the wrist.

Treatment

It is rare, but a ganglion cyst may be painful, especially if the cyst presses a nerve. The cyst may sometimes interfere with joint movement. Most of the times, ganglion cysts clear on their own.

In case the ganglion cyst should be troublesome to you, if the cyst limits or interferes with your daily activities, or has an unacceptable appearance to you, treatment can often be non-surgical. We may also drain or remove the cyst for you.
