Direct Anterior Approach Hip Replacement Surgery
Dr. Hudanich now performs a total robotic hip replacement direct anterior approach surgery using the Stryker® Mako™ Robotic-Arm Assisted Technology for total hip replacement and the Stryker® Mako™ hip implants, designed to enable the artificial joint to move much like a normal, healthy joint. Total Hip Replacement Surgeries are designed for patients who suffer from non-inflammatory or inflammatory degenerative joint disease of the hip.
What is a Hip Replacement Surgery?
Hip replacement surgery is a surgical procedure in which the hip joint is replaced by a prosthetic implant, also called a hip prosthesis. Hip replacement surgery can be performed as a total replacement or a hemi replacement.
What is a Direct Anterior Total Hip Replacement?
Total hip replacement surgery or THR involves the removal of arthritic bone ends and damaged cartilage by replacing them with hip implants that are designed to replicate the hip joint.
A direct anterior total hip replacement is a minimally invasive surgery. An anterior approach means that it is an approach to the front of the hip joint as opposed to a lateral or side approach to the hip or posterior or back approach. During surgery, the femur, or head of the thigh bone, and the acetabulum, or hip socket, are replaced. Typically, the artificial ball with its stem is made of a strong metal, and the artificial socket is made of polyethylene, a durable plastic. Hip replacement surgery can be performed as a total replacement or a hemi replacement.
By performing a minimally invasive surgical approaches such as the Direct Anterior Approach, DAA, rehabilitation is accelerated and your total hospital time is decreased because the hip is replaced without detachment of muscle from the pelvis or femur. This technique may be associated with reduced muscle damage and pain, as well as faster post-operative recovery.
Stryker offers market-leading hip replacement implants for total hip arthroplasty including our primary and revision portfolios designed to offer you a wide variety of implants, instrumentation and muscle-sparing surgical approach options.
