Healing after an injury relies on a well-orchestrated and complex series of events where proteins in the blood act as messengers to regulate the entire process. Many proteins involved in the healing process are derived from platelets — small, colorless cell fragments that circulate freely through the bloodstream.

When an injury occurs, platelets become activated and rush to gather at the damaged site where they release beneficial proteins called growth factors that stimulate tissue repair. What are orthobiologics?
Orthobiologics are a treatment that uses the body’s own tissue and cells to help heal and regenerate. Commonly used orthobiologic treatments are platelet-rich plasma (PRP), bone marrow concentrate (BMC), and donated amniotic injectable. These are explained below.
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)
What is PRP?
PRP stands for Platelet-Rich Plasma. Platelets contain growth factors that help the body's own healing process. Your own blood is drawn just like when you donate blood or have it drawn at a lab.
The blood is then placed in a special machine that spins it down and separates it to get the platelets. The platelets are then injected back into you at the place where your problem is under ultrasound or X-ray to improve accuracy. You may receive pre-treatment medication to take by mouth to make you more comfortable if needed.
Bone Marrow Concentrate (BMC)
What is BMC?
What to expect during the procedure
Bone marrow is taken from certain locations and used to derive stem cells for your injection.
Bone marrow is typically taken from your posterior iliac crest (top of your hip where you would rest your hands).
The area will be numbed with lidocaine prior to the procedure. You should only experience pressure and possibly mild discomfort.
Once the bone marrow is taken, it is spun down and concentrated similar to the PRP process – this will take about 20 minutes. The injection can be painful and pre-treatment medications can be used to help with this if needed.
PRP vs. BMC
PRP contains platelets and growth factors thought to improve the body’s own healing process.
BMC contains stem cells that are thought to provide more of a self-renewal process. The BMC also does contain a percent of platelets as well – almost like a “PRP Plus” injection. Think of BMC like seeds in the garden, while PRP is like the fertilizer for the garden.
Choosing which injection is right for you will be a decision between you and Dr. Ronald Hudanich based on your individual case.
There are many factors to consider including the condition being treated, medical history and experience that will help determine which treatment might provide the best outcome.
Amnion Viscous – Amniotic Injectable Treatment
What is Amnion?
Arthrex Amnion™ Viscous is amniotic fluid rich in growth factors that activate the body’s own healing response. It is derived from donated human birth tissue and fluid. Birth tissue is obtained with consent from healthy mothers during cesarean section delivery.
Arthrex Amnion Viscous is indicated for surgical applications associated with soft tissue procedures. It can be applied directly at the site of inflammation or injury.
Am I a candidate for PRP treatment?
Please ask us, speak with your physician, your health care provider and see if this treatment is right for you.
Your provider will perform an examination to decide if this therapy will benefit you. If you are taking anti-inflammatory medications or blood thinners, your physician may temporarily discontinue the use of these until your treatment has taken place.
What are the risks associated with PRP treatment?
Platelet therapy uses your body’s own natural properties to treat your injury.
Side effects from PRP injections are very uncommon, but please talk with your provider at length to discuss the risks and benefits associated with this treatment option.
